Safety Flagger Volunteer Requirements: Race times, requirements and duties may differ from track to track. Please refer to the instructions you’ll be provided prior to your event. Being a safety flagger will require that you are physically capable of standing for extended periods of time and performing the duties of spotting any downed riders and/or waving of the appropriate flags.
Though we did not create this content, we suggest that you review this video found on the Brett Downey Safety Foundation Page for an idea of what Flagging entails:
What To Expect:
Over the course of the day, temperatures will fluctuate quickly. Could be cold early, then hotter than Hades in the afternoon. Flaggers will be up close and personal with the racing, and thus should be prepared with the proper clothing, closed-toe footwear, as well as optional (but recommended) eye/ear protection.
You’ll be expected to show up for a Mandatory Safety Meeting the night prior to the race. Here you’ll be assigned to a station along the track, given your event t shirt, and briefed on any safety protocols for the event.
A complimentary Breakfast and/or Lunch are usually included, but specific details will be provided at the Mandatory Safety Meeting the day prior to your event.
Camping and Parking passes are available for Volunteer Safety Flaggers
“This is a professional sport, why are the flaggers unpaid volunteers?”
It's a fair question and one that drives the mission of this entire project. For over 50 years since the inaugural Outdoor MX national, flaggers have traditionally been unpaid volunteers sourced from the local racing community. While this grassroots approach is accessible for the average fan, it lacks a certain level of professionalism.
Looking ahead to the next 50 years, Flagger Finder aims to change this by becoming the dedicated recruitment and training organization for flaggers. Our goal is to recruit, adequately train, and fairly compensate flaggers - so that an inherently dangerous sport can be made a little bit safer.
Your support is essential in helping us achieve this vision.
